Osborne 53.30.1 Many of America’s leading professional artists visited Norfolk to paint the city’s elite. The portrait of the merchant William Vaughan on the left was likely executed not long after his tenure as Mayor between 1802 and 1803. The greater sense of volume in Charles Bird King’s portrait of Butler Maury, also a merchant, may be the result of professional training in London. Notice the similarities in the pose and dress of these two young men: evidence of shared tastes and values among Norfolk’s leading citizens.
