Object Label Anthony Berger American, born ca. 1832 Abraham Lincoln, 1864 Albumen print (photograph) Lincoln sat for this photograph in Mathew Brady’s Washington, D.C., studio on February 9, 1864. The studio manager Anthony Berger operated the camera and made a total of seven images that day. This portrait appeared on U.S. five-dollar bills between 1914 and 1995. Other portraits by Berger from that same sitting are used on the current five-dollar bill design and on the face of the penny. Lincoln’s son Robert later said that this was the best photograph ever taken of his father. Gift of David L. Hack and Museum purchase, with funds from Walter P. Chrysler, Jr., by exchange 98.32.311
